Coronaviruses are only about 100 nanometers in size, but they are not isolated in the air. They are always attached to some fine particles or sneezing droplets. If the mask can filter out these fine particles and droplets, it can significantly reduce the inhalation of virus. The thickness of medical surgical mask is small, but the filtering effect of melt blown nonwovens is very high. Melt blown nonwovens are composed of ultra-fine polypropylene fibers and are treated with electrostatic electret finishing. When the wearer inhales air, the melt blown layer can capture the fine particles and droplets in the air through inertial collision, interception and diffusion, especially the electrostatic attraction mechanism, so as to prevent the invasion of virus. Therefore, the medical surgical mask composed of three layers, namely, the surface barrier layer, the middle melt blown filter layer and the skin moisture absorption layer, can effectively block the inhalation of virus.
Although the cotton gauze mask is composed of many layers of gauze, it is very thick, but it can not prevent the virus from invading. Compared with melt blown nonwovens, the gauze has large pores, which makes it difficult to play a role in inertial collision and interception, and can not electrostatic electret and filter out most of the fine particles. On the other hand, gauze is usually made of cotton fiber, which is hydrophilic and hygroscopic. When the wearer inhales the air, part of the droplets are blocked on the surface of the mask. However, it will penetrate into the mask by virtue of the hydrophilicity of the fiber. Therefore, the anti-virus effect is not good.
Can wearing two medical surgical masks at a time have better anti-virus effect? There is no need to wear two medical surgical masks at a time, which will not improve the efficiency of intercepting fine particles and droplets, but will greatly increase the respiratory resistance and make the wearer feel difficult to breathe.
